This game's story follows a group of adventurers who travel through time to prevent a global catastrophe. Battles in Chrono Trigger are fought using an active time battle system whereby party members can take actions once their personal timer gauge is filled. Party member actions include physical attacks and special moves. One unique feature of Chrono Trigger is that as party members fight together, they can learn combo moves involving 2 or more characters, that require each member involved to a have a filled ATB gauge.
